Hundreds of Rouse Hill and Beaumont Hills residents were treated to free ice-cream over two nights during July, thanks to a collaboration between Shad McMillan, director at Harcourts Rouse Hill, sales executive Greg Mainstone, and vintage ice-cream and dessert truck, Retro Birdie.
With plenty of excitement on the Harcourts Rouse Hill social media channels in the lead up to the big night, there was no shortage of people eager to get their hands on their favourite treat - so much so that a second night was organised to mend the broken, sugarless hearts who missed out the first time.
“We asked everyone who missed out the first time to send us a message and we sent the van straight to their street so that the kids didn’t miss out,” Shad said.
“It was incredibly popular and people just absolutely loved it.”
Rumour has it that more than one parent used the upcoming treat as a bribe/encouragement to get their young students through another day of homeschooling.
Phones at the ready, many of the ice-cream hunters also logged on to Snack Tracker to eagerly follow the location of their favourite 1967 Ford Transit M1 truck as it made its way across the suburbs.
Fortunately for Shad, he was in the right place at the right time.
“I was actually doing a showing that night too so I got a waffle basket with caramel, Oreo and popcorn. It was pretty amazing.”
A callout for happy snaps of people enjoying their ice-creams saw the good times and heartwarming stories roll in, proving a little kindness, genosority and a whole lot of sugar goes a long way.
“We received a wonderful message from a single mother who said she never buys ice creams like this for kids as they’re too expensive for her so she really appreciated it and her kids were so excited,” Shad shared.
“We were just trying to put some smiles on people’s faces during this tough time and to sweeten up life during lockdown and we hoped it helped out a little.”
Harcourts Rouse Hill is planning to keep the sweet life rolling in the future too, with family ice-cream promotions and initiatives in the works.
With an abundance of the people’s favourite flavour - Oreo - at the ready, it’s sure to hit the spot.
