Running a family business can come with its own challenges, however it can also be one of the most rewarding and successful things you can ever undertake in your lifetime - just ask the Ross brothers.
A formidable foursome anyway you look at them, the Ross's have come together to thrive under the Harcourts banner, having all individually risen through the real estate ranks before starting their own office with one of the country’s most prolific real estate brands.
Having experienced incredible growth and success in such a short time, Nigel Ross believes it is both the combination of a good mix of personalities and a strong network that has contributed to their meteoric rise - a rise that has seen the Harcourts Ross Realty team sell 157 properties valued at over $74.4 million over the past 12 months.
“We know the local market very well having grown up here,” Nigel explained. “Our networks are also quite wide and various, due to the difference in age groups of the people we know. Our community involvement in sporting clubs and local sponsorship also means that hopefully, when people are thinking about anything real estate, they think about us and Harcourts.”
The story begins with Paul, who after 21 years as a High School teacher, decided selling real estate was the way he wanted to spend his days. He started with Harcourts in 2013, with his brother Nigel coming onboard after a unique situation with the sale of his own home.
“I was actually selling my brother Nigel’s house for him and had a flat tyre on my way to the first open,” Paul recalls.
“I called Nigel and said, ‘you’ll have to do the open yourself’. I told him to take the family pictures off the wall, put some nice clothes on and take the names and details of the buyers and I would take it from there when I arrived.
“Soon after that he said he would also like to give real estate a go.”
Nigel’s move into real estate was quickly followed by Ken and Shane who not only joined Harcourts in 2016, but the latter followed in Paul and Nigel’s footsteps by winning his own Harcourts “Rising Star” Award in his inaugural year.
Now, Harcourts Ross Realty is one of Western Australia’s fastest growing agencies, incorporating licensee Paul, General Manager Ken and sales consultants Nigel and Shane.
Ken explains that like any “brilliant idea” it started with a conversation over a few drinks.
“Paul and Nigel were already working for a Harcourts office and Shane had just told us he was going to join them. I had recently returned home from FIFO (fly in fly out) to start my own settlement agency and then a light bulb moment happened. I said, ‘let’s start our own office’. I would manage it and the brothers could concentrate on listing and selling.
“As the brothers were already working with the group, we were aware of the Harcourts values and they are values that we ourselves believe in, so (to start our own office together) really made sense.”
He said although brand awareness had played a big part in the office’s success, the on-boarding of a fantastic team had also been one of the keys.
“Having the right staff who deliver our values and have a common goal has been really important for us in becoming a place where everyone works together to be the best and deliver the best to our clients.”
Shane said working with 4 people who were equally 100% dedicated to being successful made any challenges associated with being a family run business much easier to overcome.
“Like any family business, it certainly has its challenges, but we have been meeting those challenges head on with a mixture of hard work, professionalism and cooperation with each other,” he said.

“I had also attended the national conferences as a recipient of the Rising Star Award for Harcourts nationally and was super impressed with the amount of states and countries Harcourts were in and how friendly and giving the staff were across Australia and overseas - the Harcourts values really resonate with all four of us.”
Paul added that having the CEO just a phone call away at any time was further proof of the calibre of organisation Harcourts is.
