Harcourts and supporters donned their heels to help raise awareness of violence against women

May 12, 2015 2:35:02 AM Share this:

Real estate agents and a huge group of supporters across Australia rallied together on Friday 8 May and walked a mile in high heels to help raise awareness of the issue of violence against women.

The Harcourts Foundation in conjunction with White Ribbon Australia held walks across Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland, Western Australia, Tasmania and South Australia to shed light on an issue that affects up to 1 in 5 Australian women.

The Harcourts Foundation National Coordinator Julia Eyles said she was moved that so many people showed their support, with almost eight hundred walkers joining the team on the day across Australia.

“This is an issue we are all very passionate about, it was so good to see that after five months of planning, so many chose to show their support and walk with us to shed light on an issue that affects so many”, said Mrs Eyles.

More than $100,000 has been raised so far nationally and counting, with donations being accepted until the end of May.

The event now holds White Ribbon Australia’s record for the highest community fundraising activity to date.

The walks took place across the country at a crucial time, with 34 Australian women having lost their lives to domestic violence already this year, according to White Ribbon.

Several notable ambassadors took part in the walk nationally, including Australian of the Year, Rosie Batty in Melbourne, whom has been personally affected by domestic violence.

All proceeds raised through this campaign will be donated to White Ribbon’s Break the Silence programme in primary and secondary schools across Australia aimed at changing generational attitudes toward violence.

Harcourts Group Australia puts on their heels to help raise awareness of violence against women

Apr 16, 2015 4:43:31 AM Share this:

Harcourts Group Australia is preparing to walk a mile on Friday 8 May, when the group will join forces with White Ribbon Australia to take a stand against violence at the annual Walk a Mile in Their Shoes event.

Harcourts offices and supporters across Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland, Western Australia, Tasmania and South Australia will march at 11.30am (AEST), to raise funds and awareness of violence against women.

Almost 600 men and women are expected to march on 8 April this year whilst donning a pair of heels to increase public awareness of the impact of violence against women in Australia.

Managing Director, Mike Green says he’s proud the entire group is across this initiative which has already raised over $22,000 to date.

“It’s terrific to see our team come together to support such a worthwhile cause.

“This event started in Victoria two years ago, and was led by our CEO Sadhana Smiles and it’s now grown to include every state we operate it,” says Mr Green.

In 2013 and 2014, Harcourts Victoria raised over $30,000 for each march, with the Group aiming to raise over $100,000 nationally this May.

This year, several notable ambassadors will be taking part in the walk, including Australian of the Year, Rosie Batty in Melbourne, former AFL coach, Leigh Matthews in Brisbane and former Australian Wallabies player, Garry Ella in Sydney.

White Ribbon Australia and Harcourts Group Australia will be accepting donations for Walk a Mile in Their Shoes until the end of May.

All proceeds raised through the campaign will be donated to White Ribbon’s Break the Silence programme in primary and secondary schools across Australia aimed at changing generational attitudes toward violence.

Harcourts teams up with The Alannah and Madeline Foundation for anti-bullying program

Nov 28, 2014 11:00:06 PM Share this:

The Harcourts Foundation has partnered with The Alannah and Madeline Foundation to stamp out bullying with an $11,000 grant to implement the Foundation’s Better Buddies Framework in five schools across Victoria.
Dr Judith Slocombe, CEO of The Alannah and Madeline Foundation, said the Better Buddies Framework helps prevent bullying by creating friendly and caring school communities.
“Bullying is the most common form of violence against children, with one in four kids affected every fortnight, and we know that bullying behaviour can lead to an increase in violent incidents in our community, so early intervention is vital,” said Dr Slocombe.
“We know Better Buddies is having a real impact, with a recent evaluation showing 95 per cent of principals believe Better Buddies helps to create a friendly and caring school environment and 89 per cent reporting a reduction in the number of bullying incidents as a result of the program.”
Under the Better Buddies Framework younger students are paired with an older ‘buddy’ to help build strong networks and connections between students, with schools hosting both formal and informal activities to engage the buddy pairs.
“The program gives all of the students someone to connect and create a friendship with. It has provided older students with an opportunity to be a positive role model and feel important within the school,” said Dr Slocombe.
“We are enormously grateful for the support of the Harcourts Foundation, as without this sort of philanthropic support, and the support of our principal partner, NAB, we would not be able to operate the Better Buddies Framework.”
The Alannah and Madeline Foundation is a national charity protecting children from violence and its devastating impact. The Foundation was established in memory of Alannah and Madeline Mikac, aged six and three, who were tragically killed with their mother and 32 others at Port Arthur, Tasmania on 28 April 1996.
